Along with fall and winter comes the dreaded “flu season” and the question of whether or not you need a flu shot. The answer is that you don’t and there are many reasons why the flu shot is dangerous, ineffective and unnecessary. However, rather than use this time to focus on why that approach doesn’t work, let’s focus on what does.
Here are my 5 suggestions that absolutely can, do and will work for preventing the flu:
- Optimize Vitamin D levels – Vitamin D is one of the main nutrient components necessary to fighting infections of all kinds. The majority of vitamin D is derived from sunlight. Once fall and winter arrive we get less sunlight and viola – we encounter a “flu season.” Maintain daily doses of Vitamin D and protect yourself.
- Avoid sugar – Sugar literally destroys white blood cells by the minute. These cells are used by your immune system to protect you. Remember this as you reach for the 3rd piece of pumpkin pie or that next Christmas cookie.
- Wash your hands but avoid antibacterial soaps – Germs alone do not make you sick but good cleanliness helps minimize the chances of contacting a virus and spreading it into your eyes or nose. Wash your hands frequently with a chemical free soap and avoid anti-bacterial soaps because they destroy the normal good bacterium that protects your skin.
- Exercise – When you exercise, you increase circulation and blood flow throughout your body. The components of your immune system are also better circulated, which means your immune system has a better chance of finding an illness before it spreads.
- Get adjusted – Everything in your body runs on nerves. Chiropractic adjustments strengthen the output of these nerves allowing your body to express its full power, energy and defenses.
Your body is capable of amazing things when cared for properly. This year follow this approach and give your body what it needs to be stronger and you’ll never need (or want) a flu shot again.
